MS-05B Matt Austin Custom by TheQuestionMarksKiss MS-05B Matt Austin Custom by TheQuestionMarksKiss
Old pic: [link]

CPO Matt Austin from Mobile Suit Gundam: Zeonic Fronts should be memorable to anyone who played said game. This badass refused to upgrade to the MS-06 Zaku II, Gouf, or Dom throughout the entire One Year War. The old vet upgraded his Zaku I with better equipment as it was made available, such as a Heat Saber introduced with the Gouf, several new bazookas introduced with the Dom, and a heavy shield salvaged from an RGM-79.

Update: I re uploaded the picture because of some heavy and much needed work to the shield. The old picture showed the shield with a single and sloppy wash of rusty brown but in the new picture, the shield was treated with salt and repainted.

How I did it
1. Paint silver chrome onto the shield
2. After the silver chrome has dried, paint on the color you want. Make sure your paint is diluted with acrylic thinner or alcohol.
3. While the paint is still wet, pour salt onto it.
4. The severeity of the weathering will depend upon how long you let the salt and paint mixture dry. I let mine dry for about 1 minute.
5. Rinse painted piece under warm water.
6. Dab piece with a towel

The result will be paint with a granular texture. To get a really nice beat-up feel to your part, go over it a few times with a few thing washes of Gun Metal.

Thank you very much! And yeah, I agree that the feddy heavy shield looks odd on a Zaku I but it sure makes for a nice trophy. Anyone who could take out and RGM-79 in a Zaku I deserves to have something to show for it and Matt Austin is one hell of a pilot. :P

I've always liked the old "cannon fodder" types in the Mobile Suit Gundam series. I love the backstory on the pilot and why he rides such an old machine. He makes a nice counterbalance to the young protagonist who pilots the latest, most cutting edge weapon.

I hear you man. With the exception of Gundam Wing and Z Gundam to an extent, I've found the Gundam pilots to be bitchy little kids. Ramba Ral is easily my favorite character from Mobile Suit Gundam if only for his attitude on war.

Oddly enough, I felt the same way about the kids in Gundam Wing, but that may be more due to the fact that we ran the videos nonstop at my employer in order to sell the toys. 08th MS Team has been my favorite series so far.

It was definatelly one of the most powerful Zaku 1s of the OYW. In order to handle combat on Earth the unit was upgraded repeatedly. It started as an MS-05A, the oldest and rarest of the Zaku 1 series. From What I've gathered the unit has comperable abilities and similar parts to the MS-05S Zaku 1 Commander Type. That coupled with Matt's skill made it a very deadly force to be reckoned with.

Yeah, I have to agree. The Zaku I is like an old beat up muscle car that still runs after twelve years. Austin made that suit dance. If Char is the king of the MS-06, then Austin is the king of the MS-05.

No argument there.

I wonder how long he kept it after the war. I can't see him parting with it.

God I wish they'd make a sequel to that game. Nice weathering job, too! I'd try my hand at it if I had more experience with Gunpla, but as it is now I doubt I'll be doing anything like that for a while. Just painting models is a nightmare for me!

Thanks man! Yeah, I really wish they'd come out with another Gundam game. As for gunpla, my advice would be to just jump into it. Weathering is extremely easy. All I did was drybrush a little bit of Chrome Silver around the edges to make the paint look worn. I'd recommend starting out with a cheap HGUC RGM-79 GM. They're only about 10 bucks and they have lots of flat areas so painting doesnt take too long.

Oh, and that the Tallgeese kits were my first attempts at painting Gunpla to begin with. Basically I only just started, and neither set of paints I used was very well suited to the job or my skill level.

The Tallgeese got shorted, I think. The suit is great but the kit is bad unless it's really given a lot of love and paint. Do you still have the finished model?

Yeah, both of them. Once I get better Acrylics I plan to re-do the first one completely. The other just needs some touching up to not look bad, but I'd prolly re-do it too because I learned in this experience that I hate working with enamels.

Yeah, it's probably just that my last two kits were both HG Tallgeese 3 kits. The kits had parts to make the Tallgeese and Tallgeese 2, as well, so one became the original and the other I painted in a custom scheme... because I could. THAT one came out alright, really just need to touch it up and remember to replace the enamel paints with acrylics. The other one I did first, using a 6 year old set of acrylic paints that was so troublesome that I went out and got new paints (before I found out that enamel was more difficult to work with, naturally.) I'll keep my eyes open for some cheap GM kits, though. Thanks for the advise! Maybe when I actually get around to finishing that custom Tallgeese I'll take a picture and share it....

Sounds great! [link] has the cheapest selection I've seen. As for paints, go with a brand called Tamiya. You can find them on AmiAmi or any hobby shop.

I know right? They've got the best selection anywhere and I've never had a problem with them. The only thing to be careful of is shipping. Make sure you choose FedEx. The AMS service is Japans version of express mail/2-day shipping and it'll end up running you around 50 bucks.

Right... Well, I'll wait a little while before buying anything. Bought gas for my car the other day, so my wallet's a little thin. Mostly because, as a college student, I run entirely off an allowance from home. But I'll remember to use FedEx!

This is pretty nice. I'm almost certain you could kitbash this. I think I've seen all the parts in the HGUC ( High Grace Universal Century Line) Also, this ---> [link] Everything you need to know about Gunpla.
